INTRODUCTION

Several causes produce the same user-facing symptom: ‘the Internet is slow.’ The provider, coverage, congestion, a weak Mesh link, cabling, switching or the client device can all be responsible.

A useful diagnosis changes one variable at a time until the layer where the problem appears becomes visible.

Step 1. Verify the incoming service

When possible, test by cable at the main equipment and repeat at more than one time of day. If instability exists there, blaming WiFi is premature.

Step 2. Repeat over WiFi beside the router

Use the same client. A large difference from the wired test points toward radio configuration, band, equipment capacity or the device itself.

Step 3. Move to the exact problem area

Test where you work, where the television sits, in the room where calls drop and on the terrace guests actually use.

Example: the door that ‘breaks’ the call

A call works normally with the study door open and degrades when it closes. That small controlled test says more than replacing a router: material and signal path are directly involved.

Step 4. Compare with several users

If the network is sound for one person and deteriorates at peak time, capacity rather than coverage may be the issue.

Step 5. Observe the link between nodes

In Mesh and extender systems, the user's link to a node is only half the route. That node also needs a strong return path. Excellent local signal with weak backhaul creates a misleading experience.
