INTRODUCTION

How many days does this NVR record? sounds simple, but a recorder does not have a fixed number of days. Retention depends on how much video it receives, how that video is configured and how many hours are recorded.

Four cameras in a quiet warehouse can produce a different amount of data than four cameras facing traffic, trees, rain and constant motion. Days connect video flow, time and available capacity.

Bitrate is the bridge between camera and disk

Compressed video produces a data stream, usually expressed as bitrate. With a reasonable average bitrate, you can estimate hourly or daily data and then multiply by cameras and the desired period, leaving operating margin.

More data per second × more cameras × more hours = more storage.

Resolution matters, but it does not work alone

Frame rate, codec, quality, scene complexity, motion, night noise and continuous versus event recording can make two cameras at the same resolution consume different amounts of storage.

EXAMPLE: fifteen days do not weigh the same in every scene

A nearly static stockroom and a parking lot with traffic, trees, rain and changing light may behave differently at the same resolution. If one records events and the other continuously, the gap widens. A useful estimate documents the assumed bitrate and recording mode for every scene.

Should everything record on motion?

Event recording can reduce data in quiet areas, but should not be used only to save capacity. Aggressive detection can omit important seconds. Critical scenes may justify continuous recording or pre/post-event buffers.

Video retention also means storage, maintenance, permissions and responsibility for data. Choose a period based on the purpose and applicable obligations.

There is no single answer. Camera count, bitrate, resolution, compression, frame rate, activity and schedule must be defined and a margin left for variation.

Does motion recording always save a lot of space?+

It can in quiet scenes, but the result depends on detection quality and actual event time. Context buffers or continuous recording may still be needed.

Does H.265 always double retention compared with H.264?+

No universal factor should be assumed. Efficiency depends on scene, implementation, parameters and quality target. Use realistic bitrates for the exact models and settings.

Should I retain video as long as possible?+

Not necessarily. Longer retention needs more storage and holds data for more time. Define the period from operational purpose and applicable requirements.
